The 90-day AI plan is the reason you have not started
Ask ChatGPT how to learn AI and you get a 90-day plan. Week 1 fundamentals, week 2 prompting, week 3 tools, week 4 a project. It looks responsible. It is also the reason the plan sits in a folder and nothing changes. You do not need 90 days. You need one problem off your desk this week.
Why does every answer come back as a 90-day plan?
A syllabus is what the question invites. Ask how to learn anything and the answer arrives as a sequence of weeks, because most writing about learning is already shaped that way. Week-by-week plans show up in 20 to 30% of answers to open questions like that one.
The shape also suits whoever is selling the learning. A 10-week program needs 10 weeks of content. A course page needs modules to list. So the week grid gets built whether or not the buyer has 10 weeks of evenings, and the owner-operator never does. Your Tuesday has a GST notice, a payment stuck with a distributor, and two people short on the packing line.
I took those courses myself in 2023 after I exited my startup. "Most were useless. Too basic, 10 hours to learn what should take 30 minutes. Or too technical, assuming I could code. I can't. Never have." The plan was never the problem with them. The plan was the whole product.
How do I learn AI?
You learn AI by putting your own work through it and checking what comes back. Not by reading about large language models first. The reading is free and endless, and it produces no skill at all. The only skill that matters is catching a wrong output in your own business, where you already hold the answer.
Take the one report you read every day. For a rice mill that is the daily sale report. Paste it in and ask for the top insights, the questions it raises, the next actions, and a five-slide deck. Now do the part nobody does. Check the arithmetic against the sheet you pasted. Find the claim that is not in the data. Find the action that would be wrong in your market. Write down where the output was accurate, where it was vague, and where it was wrong.
That hour teaches you more than week 1 and week 2 of any grid. You learned the tone of a wrong answer in your own category. Repeat it tomorrow with the same report. After three or four days you are writing a shorter instruction and getting a better output, and you never read a definition of a token.
Throw the grid away and pick one problem this week
Pick the problem by money and frequency, not by how interesting it is. The work that repeats weekly, and that you or your assistant still do by hand, is the one to start with. A broker comparison table. A market note for a new district. The same customer email rewritten for every new enquiry.
Then keep it to three moves. First, give the tool the real document, not a tidied version of it. Second, state what you want back in the form you actually use: a table, a one-page note, a deck for a bank. Third, check three claims before you use any of it. Fact-check them against something you already hold.
Do that four times in one week and you have replaced the 90-day plan with a habit. At A.D.A.P.T. AI Coaching the first session ends the same way, with the problem picked. The plan comes later, if it comes at all, and by then it is your plan and not a generic one.
What do owners ask before they start?
Do I need to learn prompt writing first?
No. You learn it faster while doing one real task, because a bad output shows you what you left out of the instruction. Give the tool the document, the context, and the format you want back. That is most of prompt writing, and your own work will teach you the rest within a week.
What if my data is in WhatsApp and paper registers?
Start with whatever already exists in a file, usually a Tally export or an Excel sheet someone mails you. One real document is enough to begin. Paper and chat threads get handled later, and often the first useful output is the summary that replaces the forwarding.
What if the output is correct but I cannot use it?
Ask again for the form you actually use. A correct output that sits unused is usually a format problem: paragraphs when you needed a table, or a long note when the bank wants one page. State the form in the instruction, then keep that instruction and run it again next week.
